Increasing specialist provision (ages 5-16)

In the last 5 years, we have increased  the number of places at special schools by 448, but we know that the need for new places continues to rise.  The Valley School roof construction

There is work going on across the county to increase places in different sectors, and you can read all about our plans and progress in our Increasing Specialist Provision webpage.

Re-build at The Valley School, Stevenage

As part of the programme of improvements, the re-build of The Valley special school in Stevenage is nearing completion now, and the picture on the right shows the roof of the new school.  We are hoping that pupils will start to transfer to the new school in October 2023.

Specialist Resource Provisions (SRPs)

We are also starting to open our Specialist Resource Provisions in secondary schools across the county. These SRPs are for children who need additional support to access learning in a mainstream school and will have staff who are trained to support children with developmental language disorder, social communication needs and those with autism.  In SRPs, pupils have a safe space where their educational, communication and emotional needs can be met. Children will be placed in these SRPs through the same process as for special schools.  Find out more about our plans for SRPs on the Local Offer.

Exam and revision stress (ages 16-18)

Exam season is under way and many of our young people will be feeling the pressure.

Just Talk has put together a list of practical resources and support which will help both young people, and their parents, through this stressful time.  View the Just Talk exam and revision stress guide.
